Untangling

‘Untangling’ exists at the end of a broken relationship, the other party didn’t want to untangle things and figure it out, they just cut their way out of the situation, like a frustrated child tasked with untangling the fairy lights for Christmas. This song is bitter towards that person who chose to leave with violent apathy, leaving you to try and piece yourself back together.

LYRICS

You got caught up
In the strings that held my heart up
Untangling takes time so you cut your way out of mine

You got caught in a situation you wanted no part in
But I think you owed it to me to leave more gracefully

I’m wearing glasses of rose but
You’ve shattered your pair of those so
You see me with cracks in my face
Like I’m wearing a veil of spider web lace

Thought I caught you
Even for a moment I fought for you
I thought you were at my side fighting the fate
But you were fighting your battles to get away

Now I’m caught in a web that you never designed
Never decided to make mean as much
As I made you mean to me

I’m wearing glasses of rose but
You’ve shattered your pair of those so
You see me with cracks in my face
Like I’m wearing a veil of spider web lace

I’m holding onto your touch
But my skins never felt so much so
You left me with a sour taste
I’m wearing a veil of spider web lace

Tying string around my neck
I’d hate for you to break a sweat, no
Caught up in a web that we can’t untie
Not that you’d try

I remember driving home and writing out the whole first verse in my voice memos, like the words were all written in front of me. The song first existed as a very ballad-y ambient track, but I didn’t want to revel in the sad feelings I had, so even though it was a massive struggle, I finally recreated it into something I could dance to. This song has some of my favourite lyrics
